Planning on celebrating National Barrel Aged Beer Day tomorrow? Here are ten independent North Carolina craft breweries to celebrate with! We’ve compiled 13 barrel aged beers for you to try. Check it out!
Raleighwood | Raleigh Brewing Company (Raleigh, NC)
Inspired by the early days of Hollywood & its film industry- a scene that exploded with dreamers and doers much like the current craft-brewing scene in Raleigh- The Raleigh Wood Series is Raleigh Brewing Co.’s malty interpretation of an actor and their repertoire. In this case, the actor is an English style old ale providing a different barrel-aged performance every year! This year’s performance comes courtesy of a Scotch Barrel Aged Raleighwood released Monday October 2nd at the Raleigh Brewing Co. taproom. You can also find the Raleighwood Trilogy set which includes 2017,2016 and 2015’s editions as well.
Sexual Chocolate | Foothills Brewing (Winston-Salem, NC)
Released at the beginning of September, this year’s Sexual Chocolate is a cocoa infused Imperial Stout aged in bourbon barrels. Opaque black in color with a dark brown head. Big chocolate aroma with notes of espresso, blackstrap molasses, dark sweet toffee and dark fruit. If you find this liquid gold, buy it, because it’ll be all gone soon.
Eyes Of The World | Triple C Brewing (Charlotte, NC)
Eyes Of The World is Triple C Brewing’s popular Bourbon Barrel Aged Smoked Porter .This year’s version hosts huge chocolate and Bourbon notes with a mild smokiness that adds complexity to a smooth drinking 8.2% ABV. There will only be limited distribution this year so don’t wait to grab bottles, as an added bonus they also have some 2016 bottles for sale as well as a three year vertical with 2016 and 2015 draft available in the Triple C Brewing tap room only.
Tip Of The Vipers & Blubade | Fonta Flora (Morganton, NC)
Known for its delicious wild ales we couldn’t settle for just one of Fonta Flora’s recent releases.
BLÜBADE 6.4% $18/Bottle
Appalachian Wild Ale brewed with local malted barley, local malted rye and local raw wheat. Boiled with burlap-aged hops. Fermented with our mixed house cultured in stainless steel. Transferred into oak for 4-6 months of aging. Transferred out of oak onto a delicate amount of local pink lemonade blueberries from the summer of 2016, grown by Fonta Flora Brewery friends at Indian Grove Farms of Mount Airy, North Carolina. Pink Lemonade blueberries are legitimately pink in color, which is why this AWA has a very faint pink hue. Fermented and aged on the pink lemonade blueberries in the barrels for 8 months. 1.5 years old at time of bottling. Conditioned naturally inside the bottle.
Tip of the Vibers 6.4% $18/Bottle
Appalachian Wild Ale brewed with local barley and local raw wheat. Boiled with burlap-aged hops. Fermented with Fonta Flora’s own mixed house cultured yeast in stainless steel. Fermented and aged on the grapes for 2 months and transferred back into freshly dumped red wine barrels. Matured in the wine barrels for an additional 8 months. 16 months old at time of bottling. Saxy Machismo | Haw River Farmhouse Ales (Saxapahaw, NC)
Haw River Farmhouse Ales has announced that this year’s batch of Saxy Machismo is ready for release! In case you have yet to please your taste buds with this amazing Quad, Saxy Machismo is Haw River Farmhouse Ales’ big, beautiful, Belgian-style Smoked Quadrupel that’s been awoken from it’s almost-year-long bourbon barrel slumber. During its slumber, Saxy soaked up all that fantastic vanilla, oak and bourbon character alongside a handful of bright, chocolatey guajillo and scorched habanero peppers for a bit of a punch. This is a beer you’ll not want to miss.
Magnifera Mango Sour | Brewery Bhavana (Raleigh, NC)
After many months, Magnifera, Brewery Bhavana’s mango sour ale is ready! For Patrick, their brewmaster who spent two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in East Africa, Magnifera is a remembrance. It is an attempt to recreate the sheer delight of mango season in Uganda and the joy of bright, ripe fruit after 9 months of thirst. Aged for many months, in both their white oak foeder and single-use wine barrels, it began its life as a buckwheat saison. Thirty pounds of dried mango and their house sour culture made the difference.
